Why we give way to elephants...

How's this for road rage - Africa style!?

We received a sequence of shots taken in Pilanesberg in South Africa during February this year.

A large elephant bull has a string of vehicles behind him as he ambles down the road.

Some fool in an approaching VW gets impatient and decides to pass and learns a big lesson!!

The occupants survived - this full display sequence of African road rage has to be seen!

We've been having more fun online, try some of these: a Zimbabwean i-Pod prototype; Serengeti gongs; giant tuskers, ranger training and more...     Zambezi Safaris on Facebook

Off the track and very nearly off the map!

Conservation and responsible tourism is at the heart of everything we do but you won't find pages boasting about these issues on our websites. Supporting vital conservation projects and partnering with people and organisations who follow an ethical path has underpinned our business long before these became the buzzwords of the tourism community.

Following Trish's recent safari to Mozambique we'd like to share two shining examples of genuine eco safaris run by our partners there. On these safaris you'll be way off the traditional safari grid. You'll find camps which leave little or no impact on the surrounding environment. You'll meet hardworking professional Africans modestly providing skills training and jobs for the local communities around them.

Most of all you'll have fun on a wonderful old-fashioned safari - walking, driving, swimming, diving, eating too much, a fair bit of snoring and swapping of long stories around the fire!

8 Day 1sland Hopping Dhow Safari
Take a voyage in a traditional Arab dhow, exploring one tropical 1sland to the next in the awesome Quirimbas Archipelago in northern Mozambique. Dive, fish, paddle, star gaze and sleep out in mobile camps before reaching Ibo 1sland to enjoy its unique culture.

Gorongosa - Mozambique

Gorongosa National Park, situated at the southern end of the Great East African Rift Valley has a wide diversity of species and ecological features found nowhere else in Africa.

Largely decimated during Mozambique's CivilWar, WWF cleared the park of landmines in the 90's and set up successful anti-poaching units.

With aid from the Carr Foundation and the Mozambique government the park enjoys the protection and funding of the Gorongosa National Park Trust.

Gorongosa is well on the way to recovery - now's a good time to visit the area before regular tour1sts do!

[National Geographic have already covered, Getaway magazine are doing an expose' in November 2011, Food and Tr@vel (UK) will be publishing an article shortly, see Alison Westwood's Getaway-FB photos]

BEYOND EXPECTATIONS
Thank you for a wonderful week. Beyond expectations. Words fail to express our deepest gratitude; its as though were still in a dream as we rest in Joburg.

A wonderful place and wonderful people. We shall surely return.

Warmest regards,

Scottish Auction - Prestonfield, Edinburgh: The Earl of Dalhousie hosted the Scottish Auction and Dinner at Prestonfield on behalf of the G@me & Wildlife Conservation Trust Scotland on 12 May. In association with Andy Hogg of the BushCampCompany in Zambia we had an 8 night safari on offer in the Luangwa for which we're proud to have raised £7500 towards the Trust.  Find out more about GWCT or see us during the Scottish G@me Fair at Scone Palace (Perth, Scotland) from 1 to 3 July 2011! Northern Botswana: we're into the 3rd year of super-floods in the Okavango eco-system so Wilderness Safaris including Dave van Smeerdijk and Grant Woodrow took some intrepid pioneers to scout east, west, south and north to find out more about the 25 year wet period that local experts believe we've moved into. A fuller report follows, but in the meantime take a look at some of Michael Poliza's photos plus a short video of this safari by Michael Merbeck. Singita Pamushana (Zimbabwe) is Global Winner in the Conservation category of the 6th annual World Tr@vel & Tourism Council's (WTTC) Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, announced on the 17th of May. This is one of nine low-impact/high-end safari lodges in Southern and East Africa, regarded to often as one of Southern Africa's best kept secrets. Speak to Chris about Singita southern Africa, John about Singita East Africa.

Grumeti elephants, Tanzania

Bwindi gorilla permits: Uganda Wildlife Authority has introduced promotional rates for Gorilla Permits for low months of March, April, May, October and November (were $500, now $350).  Watch this space for 2012 promotions.  Note that rates for Kibale chimp treks are likely to go up in July this year.  Note on planning a primate safari here.

East African migration: large groups of wildebeest were congregated around the Ndutu, Nasera and Olduvai areas of the Serengeti at the end of April, but early May rains in the area have drawn part of the migration into the central Serengeti...
