Northern Botswana: last year's rainy period was noted as "the superflood of 2010" which provided a major boost to the 20000 sqkm Okavango eco-system. Inflow into Botswana today is higher than same time last year and the increased water tables over the last 3 years will further enhance the massive biodiversity in northern Botswana this year. Best places will be Okavango Delta, the Linyanti, the Savute, Lakes Ngami and Mababe. Get there if you can. [...more on the Okavango from Wikipedia] Zambezi rains: another year of outstanding river levels throughout the Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe catchment areas. So whilst we had a lot of drama in the middle and lower Zambezi a month ago the weather pattern is just running its normal course. Kariba has been spectacular. |

Zambezi rafting: with a massive rise in water levels during January operations closed early with an expectation that we'll open only in June this year (so Nyaminyami has the place to himself for a few months)! One really hot option, give thought to the multi-day version as soon as you're beyond the commercial section you'll have big sandy camps without crowds, "narrows" to get your pulse racing and some dramatic portage spots. Speak to Mark about multi-day Zambezi rafting. [Who is "Nyaminyami"?...from Wiki] Nile rafting: work on the contentious Victoria Nile hydro project has drowned rafting on the top end of the river (including Bujagali falls and Silverback). The one day option will in future start 10 km downstream. A good option if you have a day to spare in Kampala before or after one of the gorilla safaris. East African migration: good short rains in the southern Serengeti have held the main body of the migration in the Ndutu area but the wildebeest should start moving slowly through woodlands towards the western corridor as the long rains start to set in this month. Lots of action to follow from June to end October. |
